Sodium carbonate is the second component of the Balling base carbonate method. Food grade sodium carbonate (Na2C03) (E500-i), is delivered bagged and placed in 4Kg buckets.

The classic solution is prepared by dissolving 450g (50% concentration) of product in 5 liters of reverse osmosis water at 25-30°C. It helps maintain the carbonate hardness at a rate of 1°Kh for 20mL of solution per 100 liters of seawater.

Please note that the carbonate-based Balling method requires a very different implementation from the classic Balling method, the calcium carbonate must for example only be distributed during the night phase, when the pH is low and dosed in small fractional quantities spread over the night period.
